Telomerase is an enzyme that can slow, stop or perhaps even reverse the telomere shortening that happens as we age. The amount of telomerase in our bodies declines as we get older. So as we get older aging can accelerate.
In 2009, the Nobel Prize for Medicine was awarded to three scientists who discovered how telomerase impacts telomere length. Their discovery explained how the ends of DNA strands are protected by telomeres, and that telomeres are built by telomerase. They exposed human cells to telomerase and slowed cell aging. This allowed older cells to divide again.
Activating telomerase or increasing its production in our bodies can:
· Address telomere shortening and cell aging
· Assist cells to live longer and continue to function properly
· Help old cells function as they did when they were younger.
There are a range of things we can do that might slow the loss of telomere length. These include reducing stress, stop smoking, lose weight, exercise more and eat a healthier diet.
